Khyber Medical University (KMU), Peshawar, hosted an Islamic talk session on Stress Management, featuring distinguished guest speaker Professor Dr. Hammad Tufail from the Department of Pathology at Taif Medical College, Saudi Arabia. Dr. Tufail began by quoting the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH): “There is a piece of flesh in the body; if it is sound, the whole body is sound, and if it is corrupt, the whole body is corrupt. That piece is the heart.” He explained that this “heart” represents not only the physical heart but also the spiritual heart, which finds peace through the remembrance of Allah.
Referencing the Quran, Dr. Tufail highlighted the verse: “Indeed, in the remembrance of Allah, hearts find tranquility.” He discussed how stress unsettles the heart, and despite access to life’s comforts, a lack of spiritual peace often leaves individuals distressed. Dr. Tufail emphasized understanding life’s purpose, likening life to an exam in which individuals, like students, must face and overcome various challenges and tests within a set time.
Citing the Prophet’s (PBUH) guidance, “Live in this world as though you are a traveler,” Dr. Tufail recommended adopting a traveler’s mindset as an effective approach to managing stress. He encouraged gratitude for available resources and urged attendees to focus on life’s true goals while seeking Allah’s approval. Dr. Tufail further stressed the importance of focusing on the present, as belief in destiny and concentrating on the current moment can be powerful tools for overcoming stress.
Dr. Tufail also shared the example of Prophet Yusuf (AS), who, through patience and piety, faced and overcame trials, ultimately rewarded by Allah with honor and authority. Through these points, Dr. Tufail offered the audience profound insights into achieving inner peace and effective stress management.
